Our black and green fabrics are dyed using a traditional persimmon coloring technique that dates back to the 13th century.
First, unripened Korean persimmon fruits are smashed until they become a pulp-like juice. The natural cotton fabric is then soaked in the juice and mixed in with the other ingredients (we used combinations of gall nut, indigo plant, and ash). Then it is left out to dry in the sun in an open field for 3 days. Once dry, the process is repeated every 3 days for up to 2-6 weeks depending on the season and amount of exposure to the sun.
The fabric was also twisted and bound during the drying process in a unique way in order to produce random patterns and different textures. The color patterns can never be exactly replicated, making each piece unique.
Definitely a cool learning experience, was a lot of fun as well.
